Safety for children

Children are always a big priority when it comes to pool safety. After all, they're the ones who just love swimming as much as possible! With that said, here's a few of our favorite tips to keep your kids safe during swim season.

1. Never leave children unattended
Kids are curious. So they run over to the water to dip a toe in or try feeling it with their hands. This makes it easy for them to fall in and, if they can't swim, this can be a disastrous situation.

Make sure you or another adult is always watching children when they're playing in or around the pool. Avoid texting, reading, etc. and put your full focus on making sure the kids are doing well.

2. Install a Pool Fence
Pool fences are common these days for good reason. They're not very expensive to install and they keep especially young children out of the water. There are a variety of styles and removable pool fences which can match the look of any home.

3. Teach Kids About Drains
Drains should never be played with. Make sure you teach children to stay away from pool drains, especially in spas and shallow pools. Drains have very powerful suction which can catch jewelry, limbs, hair, etc. Make sure they also know to look out for broken or missing drain covers since these are especially problematic. When swimming in spas, make sure to find the emergency vacuum shut off before getting in the water.

4. Ensure Your Drains Are Compliant
You want to make sure your drain covers are in full working order and meet the safety standards laid out by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. These drains are designed to minimize the chances of getting stuck in the drain.

5. Teach Kids How To Swim
Kids can learn how to swim at a very young age. As soon as you can, teach them how to swim so they're able to get to the side of the pool or stairs if they ever accidentally fall in.

General pool safety tips

Below are a few of the general good safety tips that adults and children should know.
1. Learn CPR
Bystanders are generally first on the scene. By understanding how to properly administer CPR, you could save a life. To get your CPR certification, contact your local Red Cross. Once certified, make sure to keep your certification current.

2. Keep Your Pool & Hot Tub Water Clean
Keeping your water clear and free from algae, overused chemicals, etc. can help prevent rashes, ear aches, and other unwanted conditions.

3. Establish Rules
Make and enforce rules for proper pool behavior. Some examples include "no running, No diving, Stay away from drains, etc."

4. Enforce The Buddy System
Make sure nobody's swimming alone. This way if someone slips and falls or gets hurt, their buddy can come and get help.

5. Never Rely on Toys to Keep Kids Safe
If your child can't swim yet, never rely on noodles or water wings to keep them safe. Instead, have them fitted with a personal flotation device.

6. If a Child is Missing - Check The Pool & Spa First
If you can't find a child, immediately check the pool or spa. In the event that they've fallen into the pool, this tip can save you precious seconds that could save their life.

7. Install Pool & Gate Alarms
You can install alarms on the pool gate and around the pool which will alert anyone inside the house when children are near the pool.

8. Remove Ladders From Above Ground Pools
When you have an above ground pool in your yard, make sure to remove and secure the ladders so children can't climb them and accidentally fall in the pool.

9. Don't Allow Children to Eat or Chew Gum in The Pool
Kids are active in the pool and play hard. This often leads to heavy breathing which could lead to them inhaling the gum and choking. To avoid this, just make a firm rule that you can't eat or chew gum in the pool.

10. Consider a Pool Cover
Specifically, a motor powered pool cover that has tracks on both sides of the pool. This adds an extra level of protection for keeping children out of the pool when they're not supposed to be.

11. Don't Drink Alcohol When Swimming
Alcohol can greatly increase the risk of getting injured when swimming. To be safe, avoid drinking when you're swimming or planning on swimming soon.

12. Completely Remove Covers Before Swimming
If you have a pool cover, make sure it's completely removed before swimming. Its easy to get wrapped up in a pool cover which can result in drowning.

13. Never Dive Into Above Ground Pools
This goes without saying but just in case you were thinking it, definitely avoid diving. These pools are too shallow and you could seriously hurt yourself if diving into one.

14. Keep Your Phone Near
Its best to have your cell phone close by. Especially when swimming with children.

15. Don't Swim When...
If you're tired, full, cold, overheated, had too much sun, etc. avoid swimming. Let's be honest, swimming can be hard and if you're not physically ready, you could get hurt.

16. Ensure You Have Proper Rescue Equipment Poolside
This includes poles, ropes, flotation devices, and a first aid kit.

17. Always Brief Babysitters On Water Safety
Make sure that your babysitter knows the rules. If the alarm sounds, it means the kids are by the pool, they should never be out there alone, here's the emergency equipment, etc.

18. Never Leave Toys in The Pool
Toys may attract your children to the water because they want to play with them. When they're done swimming, make sure you take everything out of the pool.

19. Don't Leave Chairs By The Gate
Keep chairs and other objects that children could climb away from the fence.

20. Don't Assume You'll Hear Kids In Trouble
Drowning is a silent way to go. There's no splashing that alerts anyone the childs in trouble. So with that, never assume someones watching the pool.

21. Use Common Sense
Use your judgment when swimming as an adult and with children. As long as you're always watching kids and practicing the rules you learned as a child, you'll be perfectly fine. Swimming is a great family activity, perfect for exercise, and an ideal way to cool down on a hot day. As long as you're paying attention, common sense should help you keep things safe.
